Spring into nature this Easter, with our nature inspired trail around Hindhead Commons and enjoy games and challenges for the whole family. The trail takes place from 1-16 April, 10am-3pm. £3 per trail. Includes a dairy or a vegan and Free From chocolate egg - both are made from Rainforest Alliance Certified cocoa.

Spectacular views and walks in the Surrey Hills countryside

Open the gate and step into a colourful mosaic of purple, greens and gold. All is quiet apart from the sounds of nature. Visit and discover why Hindhead Commons and the Devil’s Punch Bowl is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

You don’t have to go far to admire the views across the Punch Bowl or venture a bit further and discover the stunning scenery at Highcombe Edge and Gibbet Hill. Gibbet Hill is the second highest point in Surrey with views across the Weald.

This is good walking country with many footpaths to explore. Walk through shady woods or across open heathland with grazing cattle and wild ponies.

There’s plenty of space for family adventures and many lovely spots for picnics too. Delicious home cooked food is available from our café.

The Commons and Punch Bowl is home to an abundant wildlife and the area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Join us and immerse yourself in the natural world around you...
We are experiencing very high visitor numbers to our countryside sites during lockdown. Most car parks are full by mid-morning at weekends - there is no need to book your car parking space.

Free downloadable walks

We’ve re-opened the parkland, garden and Kitchen Café at Hatchlands. To avoid disappointment please book your visit in advance, especially at busier times such as weekends or school holidays. If you don't book we can't guarantee admission.

Take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and get back to nature amidst beautiful surroundings here at Hindhead Commons.

Adventures for kids

Dress in old clothes and go on an outdoor adventure - run, jump, explore the woods and heathland. Fallen trees are great for balancing on and playing hide and seek. Pick up sticks and make a den or look out for mini beasts creeping nearby. At weekends head over to the shepherd's hut to borrow a tracker pack; they contain spotter sheets, pencils, binoculars and a compass to help your little ones explore the great outdoors.

Breath-taking natural amphitheatre

Escape and wonder at the largest spring-formed feature in Britain – a breath-taking natural amphitheatre. The slopes are covered with heath, small streams and areas of woodland.

Gibbet Hill

This sandstone hill lies above the Devil's Punch Bowl and is the second highest point in Surrey. Admire the wonderful views across the Weald and look for famous landmarks; on a clear day you can see London and other Surrey hills including Leith Hill and Box Hill.

Escape back to nature

There’s a whole host of wildlife to discover all year round from birds and insects to grazing cattle and wild ponies.

Walk the old A3

Now that all traffic passes through the Hindhead tunnel, the route of the old A3 is redundant to cars and has become a super highway for wildlife crossing from the Devil's Punch Bowl onto Hindhead Commons.

Sensory highlights

The Commons are a wonderful place for the sights, sounds and smells of nature. Savour the far-reaching views; listen out for the many different bird songs including the nightjar, stonechat and woodlark and in the woodland green, great and lesser-spotted woodpeckers. Breathe in the woodland scents.

Stay a little longer

Close to Hindhead Commons and the Devil's Punch Bowl are two of our most beautiful holiday cottages. Emley Farmhouse sleeps 10 and Frensham Common Cottage sleeps five people. Enjoy a short break or longer stay, exploring the Surrey Hills; return each evening to open log fires, peace, tranquillity and wonderful views.

View from the telescope

We've put a telescope on the top of Gibbet Hill near the triangulation point. It looks out towards Leith Hill, London and the Weald. It's free to use and was kindly donated by the Haslemere Natural History Society through the generous legacy of member Mrs Clare Britton.

Rest and relaxation

Enjoy food and drink from the café and stroll around the 300m easy access circular route from the car park to the sandstone viewing platform. Relax and admire the superb panorama out over the hills of the Devil's Punch Bowl.

What to wear?

Outdoor clothing and sensible footwear appropriate for the weather. Ski suits are really good for children when taking part in autumn and winter outdoor activities as they keep the child snug and offer brilliant protection when splashing in puddles :) We have ones similar to this.

There are so many trees at Hindhead, why not make a little educational trip. get your little ones a book or worksheet and help them identify the trees you find.

The open areas lend themselves to a bit of bird watching. This kit contains everything you need to take your family bird watching, including bird identifcation cards and binoculars.

There are also some lovely nature trails. Allowing your little ones to go bug hunting under logs and in the leaves.
