The Farnborough Centrifuge played a key role in aviation medicine research during its 64 year life (1955 - 2019). This is an opportunity to see this unique and impressive example of 1950's British engineering (Grade 2 listed)
Opened in May 1955, the centrifuge was used to gain a better understanding of how 'G' affects the human body and to develop the countermeasures required to equip RAF front-line fast jet pilots with essential life-support systems. The visitor will be able to see the man-carrying centrifuge capable of 30 revolutions per minute (equivalent to 9G) for manned experiments plus, to a limited extent, other parts, including the 'art deco' style staircase (unusual feature for a 1950's Government building) along with a look into the Plant Machinery Room.
With the agreement of the owners, Raintree Developments Ltd, The Farnborough Air Sciences Trust will be running a series of Covid-safe tours of this wonderful facility. Tours must be pre-booked and will last approximately one hour. Over 16's only.
Access
Due to limited on-site parking it is essential that all visits are pre-booked. Note - booking closes at 1700 on 8th September for the 9th September tour and 1700 on 14th September for the 15th September tour.
The FAST Museum presents a selection from the FAST collection in the setting of a historic listed building. The Museum building dates from 1908 and was built as the headquarters of the Royal Balloon School.
Located on a hill overlooking the runway of TAG's Farnborough airfield where aircraft can be seen in the air as well as historic aircraft on display around the Museum building. The full scale replica of the Cody Flyer - British Army Aeroplane No.1A is housed in the Cody Pavilion situated in the Museum grounds.
The Museum is managed by the Trustees of FAST and the day to day running is in the capable hands of the volunteers of the FAST Association. In the Museum you can see photographs and exhibits from the early years of aviation and important pieces of aviation history, like Sir Frank Whittle's earliest jet engines and research models of Concorde.
You can watch demonstrations of a working wind tunnel and there are experts on hand to answer your questions.
Hot and cold drinks as well as cakes, biscuits and ice creams are available in the Coffee Lounge.
