What is an Alzheimer Café?
An Alzheimer Café (AC) is a form of post-diagnostic group support for people with dementia and their families and friends. It is held monthly, and welcomes people with dementia with their carers, health and care professionals and any others interested in dementia. ACs take the form of a social gathering in a café-like setting.
Their purpose is to provide psychological education about dementia in a setting that creates opportunities for people to stay connected with each other. They aim to prevent social isolation and stimulate discussion about the emotional aspects of having or caring for someone with dementia, in order to help de-stigmatise dementia.
