Our founder Sir Harold Hillier, from whom the Gardens take their name, was an avid plantsman, he wanted to establish a garden and arboretum dedicated to temperate zone "woody" plants, which would grow to maturity long after his lifetime. In 1953 with his wife Barbara, he moved to Jermyns House, two miles north east of Romsey. Here his love of trees was to flourish for the next twenty-five years, planting what was to become an internationally renowned resource for scholars, students and the general public. In this tour you’ll learn from present day experts and discover our ‘founders favourites’, the plants and trees that Sir Harold Hillier cherished and that are still the backbone of the collection today.
